About Cooperatives

Cooperatives are well-integrated into Philippine society, with the primary objective of helping improve the quality of life of its members. As enshrined in its basic tenet of cooperativism, that is, “A part must be willing to sacrifice for the sake of the whole”, the importance and role of cooperatives in promoting economic development, equity and social justice towards expectation of contributing much in nation-building is well-articulated in the Philippine Constitution of 1987, and in enabling laws on cooperatives such as Cooperative Code (R.A. 6938 as amended by R.A. 9520) and the Charter of CDA (R.A. 6939). CDA governs the 20,000 registered cooperatives in the Philippines. Although flourishing, much is still desired regarding the progress of cooperatives after over 100 years of nurturing. The transformation of micro and small cooperatives into medium and large cooperatives is the biggest hope to create significant contribution in promoting a fair and just society by building a broad sustainable base. Hence, the need to come up with a national online directory portal to serve as a one-stop shop repository for profiling digital information to empower cooperatives towards better understanding of the sector, its stakeholders and society in general.

The cooperative sector is deeply rooted in the Filipino “Bayanihan” culture which is perhaps one of exemplary and most visible practices. The cooperative movement is built on principles of cooperation and there is a common interest between the organization and its members. This structure holds promise, especially when applied to risk management towards solutions that benefit members and that are sustainable for the institution. Cooperatives offer various services to aid the overall economic development of its members. This includes a range of savings or credit products, insurance and other member benefits such as a health care programs or and mortuary benefits. Cooperatives are continually looking to enhance their offerings to help members better manage risks. Apart from risk management, cooperatives have a number of programs designed to promote and support members’ well-being.

A national online directory portal serving as all-in-one, one-stop repository platform profiling active cooperatives for better record access is an audacious move as technical growth enabler for enhanced competitiveness establishing much-needed online presence to urgently bring the benefits of modern digital technology to address present-day challenges as internet activities become prevalent in today’s society empowering non-profits to be right on top of the health crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The national online portal for Philippine cooperatives uses the domain name “cda.ph”, which will also act as extension for individual group sites and email addresses. It is conceptualized and organized to function as directory listing with own profile page posting key data and redirect to social media and websites, if available, with easy and fast “search” access feature to find competent non-profits to accelerate community-led change. Without this “internet infrastructure” facility for swift information dissemination, Cooperatives will only be reactive instead of proactively promoting globally to address industry needs missing out innovating early on to develop competencies to take advantage of opportunities to gear up for e-Commerce activities, particularly for MSMEs.
